Blue Springs is a thriving suburban community located 25 minutes east of downtown Kansas City which is conveniently
accessible by three interchanges providing residents and business with easy access to Interstate 70. Settled in 1827
by early pioneers to the area looking for water in nearby springs, Blue Springs is a community from the beginning
shaped by its citizens and their character that has created a vibrant city of 55,000 residents and growing.
Today, Blue Springs is the 7th largest city in the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area with a forecasted population by 2017 of 75,000 residents. The community has grown for many reasons but among the most consistent drivers has been the Blue Springs School District, nationally recognized for its programs and performance for over 30 years; the area 700 acres of parks, and friendly small town atmosphere of knowing your neighbors. The easy access to downtown and other metropolitan employment centers has been an especially strong drawing card when coupled with the diversity and affordability of Blue Springs housing choices that have provided high quality and attractive neighborhoods with affordable prices.
Blue Springs is in the midst of a renaissance with the community and its citizens having
completed a community-visioning plan called Renew the Blue which charts a long-term vision
for higher education, economic development, quality of life, and community development.
When this visioning is coupled with the development and redevelopment occurring throughout
Blue Springs it is plain to see that Blue Springs wants to remain a Community of Choice
for its residents and businesses while inviting new growth to the area.
Among the major initiatives underway throughout Blue Springs:
- a major effort to revitalize development in downtown Blue Springs accomplished through
a new zoning and development overlay district; redevelopment has been occurring along
one of the city's oldest retail corridors,
- 7 Highway, which to date has witnessed 15 new project developments announced, underway and or completed with many more expected;
- RED Development's 600,000 square retail and lifestyle center along Adams Dairy Parkway will join a Home Depot and Wal-Mart Super Center, bringing this area just off of I-70 to 1 million square feet of retail;
- plans are now underway to redevelop 40 & 7 Highway, former home to Wal-Mart and K-Mart, and still a major retail location and home to grocers, hardware stores, restaurants, banks and dozens of other businesses.
The last major development initiative occurring in Blue Springs resulted from the
city's annexation of more than 2,000 acres, which increased its land mass by 20%.
This new mixed use development corridor runs on the city's south end and comprises
land on the east and west side of 7 Highway from approximately Moreland School Road
three miles south to Colbern Road. This development area offer home owners with school
age children the choice of either Blue Springs of Lees Summit School Districts, dependent
upon home location amidst the planned 4,000-4,500 new homes serving executive,
maintenance-free, seniors, and apartments surrounded by walking trails, parks and lakes
in the nearby Jackson County Park system. Mixed in these developments covering over
1,600 acres will be 150 new businesses comprising total new capital investment to Blue
Springs of more than $1.5 billion.
